Micranthemum tweediei
Also known as: Monte Carlo, New Large Pearl Grass
Origin: Argentina
Micranthemum tweediei 'Monte Carlo' was first collected from a single stream locality near Monte Carlo in Argentina and has since become one of the most widely cultivated carpet plants in the aquarium hobby. It fills a desirable niche between the ultra-demanding Glossostigma and HC Cuba and the less visually striking alternatives — it grows reliably with CO2 and moderate-to-high light but tolerates minor parameter fluctuations better than either of those species. The small, round, bright-green leaves are densely arranged on creeping stems that spread both horizontally and in overlapping layers, building up a lush, textured carpet of vivid green. Unlike Glossostigma, it tolerates partial shading slightly better and is less prone to sudden melt when conditions shift. In the aquarium it is used almost exclusively as a foreground carpet plant, where it creates a polished, professional-looking lawn that elevates any aquascape. It has become standard in competition layouts and is widely sold in in-vitro tissue culture form, which eliminates pests and algae commonly found in traditionally cultivated specimens.
Placement Plant small tissue culture or propagated portions in clusters across the foreground, spacing 2–3 cm apart. Press gently into substrate with tweezers. Full coverage is typically achieved in 4–6 weeks with CO2.
Lighting Moderate-to-high lighting (50–90 PAR at substrate) produces the best dense carpet. Under lower light it grows upright rather than forming a flat mat. Ensure no overhead plants shade the foreground area.
CO2 & Fertilisation CO2 injection at 20–30 ppm is strongly recommended and dramatically accelerates carpet development. Use a nutrient-rich aqua soil substrate. Weekly liquid fertiliser with iron and full macro and micro mix keeps the carpet vivid green.
Propagation Propagates via creeping stems that root at each node. Pinch off stem sections and press into substrate elsewhere. Tissue culture portions can be torn into small pieces and distributed across a tank for rapid coverage.
Trimming Trim with curved aquascaping scissors every 3–4 weeks, cutting the carpet to 1–2 cm height. Trim across the whole carpet evenly to prevent tall patches from shading the rest. Remove cut debris thoroughly to prevent algae growth on decaying material.
