Micranthemum sp.
Also known as: Baby Dwarf Tears, BDT
Origin: Americas
Micranthemum sp. 'Baby Dwarf Tears' is a species of uncertain taxonomic origin that closely resembles Hemianthus callitrichoides but produces slightly rounder, more teardrop-shaped leaves. Like HC Cuba it requires high light and CO2 to maintain a creeping carpet habit, and without these conditions the stems grow upward rather than laterally. It is an advanced-hobbyist carpet plant rewarding those who can provide its demanding conditions with an absolutely exquisite, jewel-like foreground display.
Light: Very high (>65 PAR at substrate) is essential for lateral creeping habit. CO2: Required; 25–30 mg/l keeps growth prostrate and leaf spacing compact. Planting: Plant 1–2 cm plugs spaced 1.5–2 cm apart in fine, nutrient-rich substrate. Maintenance: Trim every 2–3 weeks with scissors; remove clippings to prevent shading the carpet. Note: Extremely similar in care to HC Cuba — all the same conditions and limitations apply.
