Micranthemum tweediei
Also known as: Monte Carlo, New Large Pearl Grass
Origin: Argentina
Micranthemum tweediei 'Monte Carlo' was commercially introduced to the hobby around 2012 and quickly became a favourite due to its attractive, coin-shaped leaves and comparatively relaxed requirements. Native to Argentina, it spreads via creeping side shoots to form a lush, deep-green carpet that softens hardscape and creates a naturalistic floor. Unlike HC Cuba it tolerates moderate rather than intense light, and while CO2 accelerates growth it is not strictly essential in well-fertilised tanks.
Light: Medium to high (40–65 PAR); produces excellent carpets at medium light unlike most carpet plants. CO2: Beneficial; injection ensures compact, lateral growth rather than upward stem elongation. Planting: Divide tissue-culture portions into 1–2 cm plugs spaced 2 cm apart in nutrient-rich substrate. Maintenance: Trim with scissors every 3–4 weeks; re-plant healthy tops if the base becomes too woody. Note: One of the most forgiving carpet plants — an excellent first carpet for hobbyists stepping up from low-tech setups.
