Micranthemum tweediei
Also known as: Monte Carlo, New Large Pearl Grass
Origin: Argentina (TC cultivar)
Micranthemum tweediei 'Monte Carlo' originates from Argentina and has become one of the best-selling aquatic plants in the world since its introduction to the hobby, thanks to its lush, round bright-green leaves and its ability to form a dense carpet without the strict high-tech requirements of HC Cuba. The tissue culture cup format provides young, sterile plantlets guaranteed free from algae and pests, ready to be planted directly into the foreground substrate. It is highly recommended for beginners seeking their first carpet plant.
Light: Medium; can carpet under moderate light even without CO2 — more forgiving than HC Cuba. CO2: Beneficial; CO2 supplementation greatly accelerates carpeting speed. Substrate: Fine, nutrient-rich substrate essential; enriched substrate layers improve spread. Planting: Rinse TC gel; separate into 2 cm plugs; plant 3 cm apart across the foreground. Growth: Moderate; creeps outward and then carpets over 4–8 weeks under good conditions.
