Microsorum musifolium
Also known as: Broad Crocodile Fern, Large Crocodile Fern, Wide-leaf Crocodile Fern
Origin: Asia
Microsorum musifolium 'Broad Crocodile' is a selected form of the crocodile fern distinguished by particularly wide fronds — broader than the standard form — that display the characteristic heavily tuberculate, crocodile-scale-textured surface at a more impressive scale. Fronds can reach 30–40 cm in length and 10–15 cm in width, making this one of the largest and most visually impactful Java fern relatives available. The texture of each frond is extraordinary, resembling genuine reptile scale patterns.
This is a specimen plant for larger aquariums where its dramatic scale and unique texture can be fully appreciated. It requires the same basic care as standard M. musifolium — attachment to hardscape, low-to-medium light, soft to moderately hard water — but due to its large frond area benefits from more consistent fertilisation and moderate water flow to prevent detritus accumulation in the frond depressions. CO2 supplementation produces the finest frond expression and fastest growth rate.
Light: Low to medium; the large textured fronds benefit from consistent, even moderate lighting for uniform development. CO2: Recommended; CO2 injection improves frond size, texture intensity, and the overall vigour of this large form. Fertilisation: Bi-weekly liquid micro and macro fertiliser; the large frond area demands consistent nutrient supply. Placement: Attach to large driftwood or background rocks; needs space to fully develop the impressive broad fronds. Propagation: Divide rhizome into generous sections retaining 2–3 fronds; re-attach to hardscape and allow ample time to establish.
