Microsorum pteropus 'Latifolia'
Also known as: Broad Java Fern, Wide-leaf Java Fern, Latifolia Java Fern
Origin: Asia
Microsorum pteropus 'Latifolia' is characterised by unusually broad, paddle- to lance-shaped fronds that are significantly wider than those of the standard Java fern. The fronds display a deep, somewhat glossy green with a smooth or very lightly textured surface, and the overall effect in a mature plant is one of bold, commanding presence. It is a medium-to-large cultivar reaching 30–40 cm in established specimens.
The broad frond surface of 'Latifolia' provides an excellent canvas for algae under high light, so moderate lighting and good water circulation are important. In optimal conditions, it is a vigorous grower for a Java fern. Its wide fronds make it particularly attractive as a midground or background specimen in spacious aquascapes, where the bold leaf shape contrasts well with fine-textured stem plants, delicate mosses, or narrow-leaved grasses. Regular removal of older or algae-affected fronds keeps the plant looking its best.
Light: Low to medium; broad fronds are prone to algae under intense lighting without supplemental CO2. CO2: Beneficial in medium-light setups; not required in low-light tanks. Fertilisation: Monthly liquid fertiliser including iron and potassium to support the large frond area. Placement: Attach to wide driftwood or rocks in midground to background; the broad leaves benefit from gentle flow. Propagation: Collect adventitious plantlets from frond undersides; attach to new substrate once several leaves are present.
