Microsorum pteropus 'Needle Leaf'
Also known as: Needle Leaf Java Fern, Thread Java Fern, Thin-leaf Java Fern
Origin: Asia
Microsorum pteropus 'Needle Leaf' pushes the Java fern form to its most extreme linear expression, producing fronds that are reduced to near thread-like proportions — typically less than 1 cm wide and up to 20–25 cm long. The result is a plant of extraordinary textural fineness that creates a highly distinctive effect when clustered on driftwood or rock, resembling a miniature conifer or fine-leaved fern. The fronds are mid-green and held stiffly upright, adding vertical interest.
This cultivar is among the most popular specialty Java fern forms for aquascaping due to the unique contrast its needle fronds provide against broad-leaved plants. It shares the standard Java fern's exceptional hardiness and tolerates low light, diverse water parameters, and growth without CO2. Its slow, compact growth keeps maintenance minimal. It is suitable for nano tanks and as a detailed accent in larger layouts, particularly in Iwagumi and nature aquascape styles.
Light: Low to medium; the narrow fronds are less algae-prone than broad forms, tolerating slightly higher light. CO2: Not required; growth is very slow but consistent without CO2 in stable, clean water. Fertilisation: Monthly liquid micronutrient dosing; iron supplementation enhances the characteristic mid-green colour. Placement: Attach to small rocks or fine driftwood; works beautifully as a nano tank specimen or midground accent. Propagation: Carefully collect tiny plantlets from frond undersides; re-attach to hardscape once they have 2–3 needle fronds.
