Microsorum pteropus
Also known as: Philippine Java Fern, Philippine Fern
Origin: Asia
Microsorum pteropus 'Philippine' is a variety sourced from the Philippine Islands, where the species grows on riverbanks and along streams at low elevations. It is characterised by larger, broader fronds than many cultivated Java fern varieties, with prominent venation and a deep, glossy green colour. The fronds can reach 30–40 cm in a well-established specimen, making it a bold and impressive background plant.
This variety is particularly appreciated in Southeast Asian biotope aquariums, where it can be paired with local fish species and driftwood from the region. Care requirements are identical to other Java fern varieties — it grows epiphytically on hardscape, tolerates a wide range of conditions, and requires no CO2. It is hardy enough to withstand moderately hard water and higher pH, and can even be kept in slightly brackish conditions. Regular liquid fertilisation and good water circulation support healthy, vigorous frond production.
Light: Low to medium; adapts well to moderate aquarium lighting across tropical setups. CO2: Not required; performs excellently in low-tech setups typical of biotope aquariums. Fertilisation: Monthly liquid fertiliser; the broad fronds benefit from regular micronutrient and iron dosing. Placement: Attach to large driftwood or background rocks; excellent as a background specimen in biotope tanks. Propagation: Collect adventitious plantlets from mature frond undersides; attach to hardscape once 3–4 leaves have developed.
