Microsorum pteropus 'Thin'
Also known as: Thin Java Fern, Narrow Java Fern, Slender Java Fern
Origin: Asia
Microsorum pteropus 'Thin' is a cultivar selected for its noticeably narrower-than-standard fronds, which give the plant an elongated, almost grass-like silhouette compared to the broad tongue shape of the typical Java fern. The fronds are a rich mid-green and typically reach 20–30 cm in length while remaining only 1–2 cm wide, creating a delicate, strappy appearance that contrasts beautifully with broad-leaved Anubias or bold-textured Bolbitis.
As with all Java fern cultivars, 'Thin' is highly adaptable and easy to care for. It grows on a creeping rhizome that should be attached to hardscape and never buried. It tolerates a wide range of light levels, water hardness, and temperature, and grows without CO2 supplementation. The thin fronds are particularly appealing when positioned to catch water movement, as they sway gently with the current. It is an excellent mid-ground accent for both nature and Dutch-style aquascapes.
Light: Low to medium; tolerates dim conditions extremely well, making it ideal for low-tech tanks. CO2: Not required; grows steadily under ambient CO2 levels in well-maintained aquariums. Fertilisation: Bi-monthly liquid micronutrient dose; iron is beneficial for the characteristic mid-green frond colour. Placement: Attach to driftwood or rock in midground areas; the narrow fronds sway attractively in moderate flow. Propagation: Remove adventitious plantlets from mature frond undersides once they develop 3–4 leaves; attach to hardscape.
