Microsorum pteropus 'Trident'
Also known as: Trident Java Fern, Three-pronged Java Fern
Origin: Asia
Microsorum pteropus 'Trident' is a distinctive cultivar of Java fern characterised by fronds that are deeply divided into three to five narrow, finger-like lobes, creating the eponymous trident or hand-like appearance. This division occurs from roughly midway up the frond, giving the plant a simultaneously structured and wild look that is highly sought after in nature aquascapes and Iwagumi-style layouts. The fronds are mid-green and typically reach 20–30 cm in length.
All Java fern cultivars share the same fundamental ease of care — they are tolerant of a wide range of conditions, grow without CO2, and require only attachment to hardscape rather than planting in substrate. 'Trident' grows somewhat faster than 'Windelov' and produces a denser clump over time. Its bold frond division makes it an excellent choice for creating visual contrast alongside fine-leaved mosses or compact Anubias varieties.
Light: Low to medium; adapts well to a wide range of light levels without significant growth issues. CO2: Not required; additional CO2 modestly improves growth rate and frond colour. Fertilisation: Liquid micronutrient dosing every 2–4 weeks; iron supplementation enhances frond colour. Placement: Tie or glue to driftwood or rocks in midground positions; the bold frond shape works best as a focal point. Propagation: Gather adventitious plantlets from mature frond undersides; attach to new hardscape when they have 3+ leaves.
