Microsorum pteropus 'Tropica'
Also known as: Tropica Java Fern, Ruffled Java Fern
Origin: Asia
Microsorum pteropus 'Tropica' is a cultivar developed and popularised by Tropica Aquarium Plants, distinguished by its wide, ruffled, or slightly corrugated fronds that are broader and more textured than the standard Java fern. The fronds display a bold, deep-green colour with pronounced midribs and a somewhat wavy margin that gives the plant a particularly lush, wild appearance. It is a medium-to-large cultivar, reaching 25–35 cm in maturity.
This cultivar is widely regarded as one of the finest Java fern varieties for aquascaping due to its attractive frond texture and robust growth. It shares all the renowned hardiness of the group and performs excellently in low-tech, low-light setups. It is especially popular in natural-style and biotope aquascapes, where its bold leaf texture creates a strong sense of depth and tropical realism. Propagation occurs via adventitious plantlets that develop on the undersides of older fronds.
Light: Low to medium; the broad fronds are tolerant of a wide range of light intensities. CO2: Not required; supplemental CO2 accelerates growth and enhances the bold frond texture. Fertilisation: Monthly liquid micro and macro dosing; this larger cultivar benefits from more regular fertilisation than smaller forms. Placement: Attach rhizome securely to driftwood or rocks; works beautifully as a midground or background specimen. Propagation: Collect plantlets formed on mature frond undersides; secure to fresh hardscape once 3–4 leaves are visible.
