Microsorum pteropus 'Undulata'
Also known as: Wavy Java Fern, Undulata Java Fern, Crinkle Java Fern
Origin: Asia
Microsorum pteropus 'Undulata' is a cultivar selected for its distinctly wavy, undulated frond margins — the fronds are broad, mid-green, and deeply crimped along their edges, creating a lively, organic appearance that is more dynamic than the smooth-margined standard Java fern. The undulation becomes more pronounced in actively growing plants under good conditions. Fronds reach 20–30 cm and are held on a typical Java fern rhizome.
This cultivar is appreciated for the unique texture its wavy fronds introduce into aquascape compositions, particularly when positioned in areas with gentle water flow where the undulating margins sway and ripple attractively. Care requirements are identical to other Java fern varieties — easy, tolerant of low light and diverse water parameters, and requiring only attachment to hardscape. It is suitable for both experienced and beginner aquascapers and pairs well with mosses, Anubias, and Bucephalandra on driftwood arrangements.
Light: Low to medium; the wavy fronds adapt well to a range of light intensities without special requirements. CO2: Not required; the undulation of the frond margins is more pronounced in plants grown with adequate CO2 and nutrients. Fertilisation: Monthly liquid micronutrients; iron helps maintain the attractive mid-green frond colour. Placement: Attach to driftwood or rocks in midground positions; gentle flow enhances the movement of the wavy margins. Propagation: Collect adventitious plantlets from frond undersides; attach to new hardscape once they have 3–4 leaves.
