Microsorum sp. 'Crocodile'

Microsorum sp. 'Crocodile' is named for the extraordinary heavily textured, bumpy surface of its fronds, which closely resembles the scale pattern of crocodile skin. This distinctive texture, caused by irregular tuberculate outgrowths on the frond surface, makes it one of the most visually unusual aquatic plants in cultivation. The fronds are broad, dark-to-mid green, and typically reach 20–30 cm, with the textured surface creating remarkable visual depth and tactile interest.

Also sometimes sold as Microsorum musifolium, 'Crocodile' is native to Southeast Asian streams and rivers where it grows on rocks and submerged logs. In the aquarium it requires the same basic care as other Microsorum species — attachment to hardscape, low-to-medium light, and clean water. It grows slowly but steadily and is long-lived. The unique frond texture makes it an outstanding focal-point plant in nature aquascapes and Asian-themed biotope setups.

Light: Low to medium; the textured fronds can collect debris under still conditions, so gentle flow is important. CO2: Beneficial; CO2 supplementation improves frond texture expression and overall plant vigour. Fertilisation: Bi-weekly liquid micronutrient dosing; iron is important for the characteristic deep-green colouration. Placement: Attach to broad driftwood or rocks as a midground focal point; the textured fronds display best under direct viewing. Propagation: Divide rhizome carefully; each section should have 2–3 fronds; re-attach to hardscape and allow time to establish.
