Riccardia chamedryfolia
Also known as: Mini Pellia, Coral Moss, Mini Riccardia
Origin: Japan, Asia
Mini Riccardia (Riccardia chamedryfolia) is a liverwort — not a true moss — that has become one of the most prized miniature aquatic plants in the high-end aquascaping hobby. It consists of tiny, repeatedly branching, dark olive-green thalli that form dense, intricate encrusting mats on stones, wood, and mesh surfaces. Under magnification, each branching thallus is a work of exceptional geometric beauty.
Cultivating Mini Riccardia successfully requires soft, slightly acidic water and CO2 supplementation — it is noticeably more demanding than most mosses and will stagnate or produce algae-prone, open growth without adequate CO2 and micronutrients. In good conditions, however, it grows into a dense, lush carpet of extraordinary fine texture that rivals any moss for visual impact.
Mini Riccardia is particularly popular in nano aquascapes and Iwagumi-style layouts, where it is used to create miniature carpets on stones or as a foreground encrustation that gives the impression of moss-covered boulders in a mountain stream. Its dark coloration contrasts beautifully with light-coloured substrates and pale stones.
Light: Low to medium; 25–60 µmol PAR; consistent moderate light produces the densest growth. CO2: Beneficial; CO2 supplementation is strongly recommended for dense, tidy growth and to discourage algae. Fertilisation: Regular comprehensive liquid fertilisation including micronutrients and iron; low-nutrient conditions cause sparse growth. Placement: Attach to smooth stones or fine mesh in foreground; the tiny scale is best appreciated close to the front glass. Propagation: Tease apart small sections of the mat and reattach to new surfaces; growth from cuttings is slow but reliable.
