About

Micranthemum tweediei, commonly sold as Monte Carlo, is one of the most popular foreground carpeting plants in planted aquascaping. Originally from Argentina, it features small, round, bright green leaves on delicate creeping stems that spread along the substrate surface, creating a dense, luminous green carpet that beautifully complements the hardscape and fish in any planted aquarium.

Monte Carlo occupies the sweet spot between very demanding carpet plants (HC Cuba) and non-carpeting alternatives: it requires medium-high light and benefits significantly from CO2, but is considerably more forgiving and easier to establish than HC Cuba. Under appropriate conditions, a full carpet can be established within 4–8 weeks.

The creeping stems naturally anchor to substrate and grow horizontally, covering available space progressively. The plant is often sold as a tissue culture (in vitro) which provides algae-free, clean material ideal for starting new aquascapes. It can also be found in emersed (potted) form.

Monte Carlo is highly valued in the Nature Aquarium and iwagumi aquascape styles, where a lush foreground carpet creates the illusion of a miniature natural landscape.

Care Guide

Light: Medium to high light (25–60+ PAR) for reliable carpeting. Lower light causes the plant to grow vertically rather than carpeting.

CO2: Recommended (15–25 mg/L) for best results. Possible without CO2 under high light, but much slower and less reliable.

Substrate: Rich aqua soil provides best results. Root tabs help in sand or gravel substrates.

Planting: Separate into small 1–2 cm clumps and plant 2–3 cm apart across the foreground. Trim floating or unanchored portions initially.

Maintenance: Regular trimming to 1–2 cm height. Trim before the carpet becomes too thick to allow light to reach the base stems.

Water Parameters: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 20–28°C.
