Myriophyllum aquaticum
Also known as: Parrot's Feather, Watermilfoil, Brazilian Watermilfoil
Origin: South America
Myriophyllum aquaticum is native to South America but has naturalised across temperate regions worldwide. Its whorls of bright blue-green, feathery leaves are visually similar to Cabomba but are considerably more tolerant of water conditions including cooler temperatures and harder water. It grows vigorously and is an outstanding nutrient exporter. While it can grow emersed, the submerged form is well adapted to aquariums and provides excellent cover for small fish and invertebrates.
Light: Medium (25–60 PAR); adapts to a wide range; grows without CO2. CO2: Not required; optional CO2 improves submerged growth compactness. Fertiliser: Weekly balanced liquid fertiliser; high nutrient uptake requires consistent dosing. Planting: Background groups of 3–5 stems; trim every 1–2 weeks to prevent surface growth. Growth: Fast; 20–60 cm; aggressive grower ideal for nutrient export in new tanks.
