Myriophyllum spicatum
Origin: Europe (native to Netherlands/Belgium)
Myriophyllum spicatum, the Spiked Water Milfoil or Aarvederkruid, is a highly ornamental submerged oxygenating plant native to ponds and slow rivers of Belgium and the Netherlands. It forms long, trailing stems densely clothed in fine, whorled olive-green to reddish feather-like leaves, and sends up small emergent spikes of tiny red flowers above the water surface in summer. Prized in Belgian water gardens for combining strong oxygenating function with ornamental value.
Suitable for full sun to partial shade in still or slow-moving water. Plant in baskets with aquatic compost or allow to float freely. Hardy and overwinters well in Belgian ponds. Thin periodically in late summer to prevent excessive biomass buildup. Sold by the bunch.
