Myriophyllum tuberculatum
Also known as: Red Milfoil, Red Myriophyllum, Tuberculatum Milfoil
Origin: Southeast Asia
Myriophyllum tuberculatum is a Southeast Asian milfoil that stands apart from its green relatives by developing intense red to orange-red pigmentation in its finely pinnate whorled leaves under strong lighting. The entire plant from stem to leaf tips can take on a rich reddish hue, making it visually unlike any other feathery-textured stem plant in the aquarium hobby.
It is more demanding than M. mattogrossense, requiring high light, CO2 injection, iron-rich fertilisation, and soft, slightly acidic water for the characteristic red colouration to develop. In less optimal conditions the plant remains green or develops only pale pinkish tones.
An outstanding choice for aquascapers wanting the soft feathery texture of a milfoil combined with dramatic red coloration. Particularly effective when used alongside green Myriophyllum species for a two-tone feathery effect in the background.
Light: High (60–100 PAR); red-orange coloration requires intense, consistent illumination. CO2: Required at 25–35 mg/L; green growth results without adequate CO2. Fertilisation: Iron 0.1–0.3 mg/L maintained; comprehensive micro dosing 2–3× weekly. Placement: Background; groups of 7–11 stems with 2–3 cm spacing. Propagation: Trim tops at 12–15 cm and replant; roots develop within 5–7 days.
