Myriophyllum tuberculatum
Also known as: Red Myriophyllum, Red Milfoil
Origin: Asia
Myriophyllum tuberculatum is native to Asia, particularly India and Southeast Asia, and is one of the most beautiful fine-leaved red plants in the aquarium hobby. Its whorls of very finely divided deep red leaves create an intricate, lacy texture that is unmatched among background plants. It is moderately demanding, requiring strong light and CO2 injection to maintain its characteristic red colouration; under insufficient light leaves fade to orange-green. Regular trimming is essential to maintain dense, colourful growth.
Light: High (70–100 PAR); essential for red colouration; fades to orange-green in low light. CO2: Required at 25–35 mg/L; without CO2 growth becomes leggy and colour poor. Fertiliser: Elevated micronutrients and iron; comprehensive NPK balance important. Planting: Background groups of 5–7 stems spaced 2 cm; trim every 1–2 weeks. Growth: Moderate; 20–40 cm; re-plant trimmed tops for denser group.
