Microsorium pteropus 'Needle Leaf'
Also known as: Needle Leaf Java Fern, Narrow Java Fern
Origin: Southeast Asia
Needle Leaf Java Fern (Microsorium pteropus 'Needle Leaf') produces markedly narrower, elongated fronds compared to standard Java Fern varieties. Its strap-like leaves create an elegant, grass-like visual effect when attached in groups to driftwood or stones. The narrow profile allows light to penetrate through the plant, making it a natural choice as a midground accent that does not heavily shade background elements.
Light: low light; tolerant of a wide lighting range. CO2: not required; liquid fertilisation maintains healthy deep-green colouration. Attachment: attach rhizome firmly to hardscape; the narrow fronds are susceptible to melting if rhizome is buried. Trimming: remove any browning fronds cleanly at the rhizome junction. Growth: slow; propagate via rhizome division or by removing leaf-tip plantlets.
