Neoregelia 'Tricolor'
Also known as: Tricolor Bromeliad, Tricolor Neoregelia
Origin: Brazil (cultivar)
Neoregelia 'Tricolor' is one of the classic large-form tank bromeliads, producing broad, strap-like leaves banded longitudinally in cream, green, and pink that deepen in high humidity and bright light. The rosette can reach 30 cm across at maturity, making it a commanding centrepiece specimen on the land section of large paludariums. Its wide, stable base and stiff leaves also make it an excellent perch and basking platform for dart frogs and small geckos.
The broad central cup holds a generous volume of water, providing reliable microhabitat for vivarium inhabitants. 'Tricolor' is a vigorous pup producer, readily forming clumps that fill out a paludarium's terrestrial zone over time. It benefits from monthly fertilisation directly into the cup and regular flushing to prevent stagnation.
Light: Medium-high indirect; 2,500–5,000 lux; tricolour banding is most vivid under brighter conditions. CO2/Humidity: No CO2; maintain humidity at 70–85% for peak leaf colour. Fertilisation: Dilute bromeliad fertiliser monthly into the central cup; flush and refill every 4–6 weeks. Placement: Best planted in a large bromeliad pot or mounted on a substantial cork bark slab in the paludarium land zone. Propagation: Remove pups at one-third to one-half parent size; allow cut site to dry before planting.
