Nomaphila stricta
Also known as: Giant Hygrophila, Temple Plant, Strict Nomaphila
Origin: Southeast Asia
Nomaphila stricta (commonly known as Giant Hygrophila or Temple Plant) is a large, robust stem plant from Southeast Asia that commands attention with its broad, lance-shaped leaves and bold vertical habit. It is one of the most adaptable aquarium plants available, thriving across a wide range of water chemistry and lighting conditions, making it an ideal choice for beginner and experienced aquarists alike. In large aquariums its impressive size creates a dramatic green backdrop that serves as a foil for smaller-leaved or coloured foreground species. Regular trimming of side shoots controls its vigorous growth and encourages it to branch, creating a lush, full appearance over time.
Light: Low to medium (20–40 PAR); thrives in most aquarium lighting conditions. CO2: Not required; optional CO2 accelerates growth and produces larger leaves. Fertilisation: Tolerates lean water; benefits from moderate regular fertilisation. Placement: Background in large tanks; too large for nano or small aquariums. Propagation: Cut side shoots 12–15 cm; roots easily and establishes quickly.
