Nymphaea capensis
Also known as: Cape Blue Water Lily, Blue Cape Lily, South African Blue Lotus
Origin: Africa (South Africa, Cape region, Madagascar)
Nymphaea capensis is native to South Africa and Madagascar, growing in warm, shallow standing or slow-moving waters across the Cape region and beyond. It is one of the most free-flowering tropical blue water lilies available, producing large, star-shaped blooms in vivid sky-blue to cerulean with prominent yellow stamens. The flowers are held on tall peduncles well above the water surface, making them highly visible and dramatic. The floating pads are large, rounded, and deep green with slightly undulating margins.
This is a robust, vigorous species that establishes quickly under warm, well-lit conditions and can become quite large in favourable settings. It performs best in heated ponds and large water gardens in warm temperate to tropical climates, flowering prolifically throughout the warm season. Individual flowers last 3–4 days and open during morning daylight hours.
Nymphaea capensis has been widely used in hybridisation, contributing its vivid blue colour and vigorous growth to many popular cultivars. It is more tolerant of slightly alkaline and hard water than some tropical blue lilies.
Light: Full sun essential for prolific blooming; half-shade produces vegetative growth only. CO2: Not required for outdoor cultivation. Fertilisation: Aquatic fertiliser tabs every 6 weeks; generous medium required — add 5–10 L of enriched substrate per plant. Placement: Warm pond at 30–80 cm depth; minimum 200 L water volume. Propagation: Side tubers detached in spring; also by seed at 26–30°C.
