Nymphaea 'Indiana'

Nymphaea 'Indiana' is a classic Marliac hybrid cultivar renowned for its changeable flower colour — a feature where individual blooms transition through different hues as they age over their 3–4 day lifespan. Flowers open in a rich orange-red, soften to apricot and salmon on the second day, and deepen to a warm copper-orange by the final day. Multiple blooms at different stages simultaneously create a multi-toned display across the water surface.

The floating pads are attractively mottled with purplish-green blotching, adding further ornamental interest. 'Indiana' is a compact to medium-sized cultivar suitable for small to medium ponds and is reliably cold-hardy through European winters. It is a vigorous bloomer over a long season, performing best in full sun.

As with most Marliac hybrids, 'Indiana' benefits from containerisation in planting baskets to control its spread and facilitate fertilisation. Annual lifting and dividing every 3–4 years maintains vigour and bloom production.

Light: Full sun (minimum 6 hours direct sunlight for reliable blooming). CO2: Not required. Fertilisation: Aquatic pond fertiliser tabs in planting basket at the start of each growing season. Placement: Small to medium ponds at 30–70 cm depth; containerise in a planting basket. Propagation: Divide rhizome in late spring; replant pieces with active growing tips.
