Nymphaea lotus
Origin: Africa, Southeast Asia
The Dwarf Red Lily (Nymphaea lotus var. red) is a compact, bulb-based aquarium plant bearing striking deep-red to maroon spotted leaves that grow in an attractive rosette form. It serves as an outstanding centrepiece plant in planted aquariums, providing bold color contrast against green stem plants. When given sufficient light and nutrients, it will occasionally produce white flowers if leaves are allowed to reach the surface.
Plant the bulb shallowly in nutrient-rich substrate, leaving the top exposed. Remove floating leaves regularly to maintain compact submerged growth. Provide medium to high light. No CO2 required but beneficial. Trim back if it grows too large for the tank.
