Nymphaea lotus
Origin: Africa / Southeast Asia
The Red Nymphaea lotus is a classic aquarium lily with broad, heart-shaped leaves displaying a rich mosaic of deep burgundy and olive-green mottling that intensifies under stronger light. It grows vigorously from a bulb, producing both submerged decorative leaves and eventually floating lily pads if allowed to reach the surface. Regularly removing floating leaves channels the plant's energy into compact, ornamental submerged growth.
Plant bulb half-buried in rich substrate. Remove floating leaves to maintain compact submerged growth and encourage new rosette leaves. Feed with root fertilizer tabs monthly. Medium light sufficient; brighter light enhances red coloration. Can grow large—trim actively in smaller tanks.
