Nymphaea zenkeri
Also known as: Green Tiger Lotus (selected strain), Tiger Lotus Green
Origin: Africa (West Africa — trade strain)
This selected green strain of Tiger Lotus offers the iconic spotted leaf pattern of Nymphaea zenkeri in a bright, fresh green palette. The leaves emerge in vivid lime-green tones and mature to a deeper mid-green, with the characteristic freckling of the tiger lotus clearly visible on closer inspection. Growth is typically vigorous and the plant adapts readily to a range of water parameters and lighting levels.
The Green Tiger Lotus is an excellent complement to red and purple stem plants, providing a lush green counterpoint in the midground or background. Its leaves are often slightly larger than those of the red strain under equivalent conditions, creating an impressively leafy presence. Pinching floating leaves regularly keeps the plant compact and ensures nutrients remain directed to the colourful submerged rosette.
This variety is particularly well suited to low-tech planted tanks where it can grow successfully under moderate light without CO2 injection, making it one of the most accessible lotus plants for beginners.
Light: Medium (40–80 PAR); grows well even under moderate community tank lighting. CO2: Not required; supplementation boosts size and growth rate. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 8 weeks; standard liquid fertiliser weekly. Placement: Midground or background; allow 20 cm clearance around the bulb for leaf spread. Propagation: Remove daughter bulbs from the base when they develop 2–3 independent leaves and replant.
