Nymphaea 'Walter Pagels'
Also known as: Walter Pagels Water Lily, White Pygmy Lily
Origin: Cultivar (European bred)
Nymphaea 'Walter Pagels' is a compact, dwarf to medium-sized cultivar producing an abundance of small, star-shaped flowers in white to very pale blush-pink, with golden stamens at the centre. The blooms are delicately fragrant and are produced in exceptional quantity relative to the plant's modest size, making this one of the best choices for small ponds and tub water gardens where vigour must be kept in balance with available space.
The floating pads are small and attractively shaped, allowing good light penetration and leaving surface area open for the blooms to be fully appreciated. The plant is fully cold-hardy and very easy to manage — one of the most beginner-friendly compact water lily cultivars available. It performs best in full sun but tolerates partial shade reasonably well.
For those with limited pond space who still want the full water lily experience, 'Walter Pagels' consistently delivers reliable, prolific blooming in a genuinely compact package.
Light: Full sun to partial shade; most prolific in full sun. CO2: Not required. Fertilisation: Small aquatic fertiliser tabs in spring; refresh annually when repotting. Placement: Small ponds and tub gardens at 15–50 cm depth; minimal container size (20–25 cm basket) sufficient. Propagation: Divide small rhizome every 2–3 years in spring.
