Nymphaea zenkeri
Also known as: Red Tiger Lotus, Tiger Lotus Red
Origin: Africa (West Africa)
Nymphaea zenkeri is native to slow-moving tropical waters of West Africa, where it grows in warm, often shaded conditions with nutrient-rich substrates. In the aquarium, the red form produces spectacular, large-lobed leaves in deep wine-red to burgundy-purple, densely covered with darker purplish spots — a pattern that earns it the common name Tiger Lotus. The leaves emerge from a compact bulb and can reach impressive size under good conditions.
This plant is one of the most rewarding aquarium lilies to keep. It grows rapidly when well fed and can dominate a tank if floating leaves are not managed. Removing surface leaves keeps growth focused on the colourful submerged rosette and prevents it from shading other plants. It is tolerant of a wide range of water conditions but benefits most from warm, slightly acidic, soft to moderately hard water.
The Red Tiger Lotus is suitable for a wide range of aquascape styles — from densely planted Dutch layouts to open, Nature Aquarium designs where it serves as a bold focal point. It pairs beautifully with green carpeting plants, fine-leafed stems, and light-coloured hardscape.
Light: Medium-high (50–100 PAR); colour intensity peaks under bright, full-spectrum lighting. CO2: Beneficial; injection produces larger, more intensely coloured leaves. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 8 weeks near the bulb; weekly iron-rich liquid fertiliser. Placement: Midground or background; plant bulb shallowly with growing tip exposed; remove floating pads regularly. Propagation: Detach and replant daughter bulbs from the base; or allow a floating leaf to develop plantlets.
