Nymphoides peltata

Nymphoides peltata is native to temperate Eurasia from Europe through Japan, growing in still to slow-flowing ponds, lakes, and rivers. It produces attractive, heart-shaped floating leaves in mid-green with subtle mottling, and above them, on separate stems, bright yellow flowers with distinctively fringed petals — a combination of floral features quite unlike any water lily, giving the plant its characteristic delicate charm. The plant spreads by long, creeping stolons just below the substrate surface.

In temperate ponds it is fully hardy, dying back to the rootstock in winter and re-emerging vigorously in spring. The spreading growth habit can lead to it colonising widely in favourable conditions, so it is best containerised in formal pond settings. It is a genuinely beautiful and easy plant for temperate water gardens, producing flowers continuously throughout summer from late spring.

Nymphoides peltata has been used extensively in pond planting schemes for naturalistic and wildlife water gardens, where it provides excellent surface cover for fish and invertebrates. It is also suitable for large cool-water aquariums where it will grow vegetatively toward the surface.

Light: Medium-high to full sun; flowers most prolifically under direct sunlight. CO2: Not required. Fertilisation: Aquatic fertiliser tabs in pond containers once or twice per season. Placement: Temperate pond at 20–60 cm depth; containerise to control stoloniferous spread. Propagation: Stolon division in spring — any section with a leaf node establishes quickly.
