Ottelia mesenterium
Also known as: Ruffled Ottelia, Philippine Ottelia
Origin: Philippines
Ottelia mesenterium is endemic to the Philippines and is one of the most ornamental and sought-after species in the genus. Its leaves are uniquely and dramatically ruffled — the margins form deep, irregular folds creating a texture unlike almost any other aquatic plant. The foliage is dark green and semi-translucent, growing on long petioles from a central rosette. It is one of the more demanding Ottelia species, requiring consistent CO2 injection, bright light, and soft to moderately hard water. Despite its challenges it is a magnificent specimen plant that justifiably commands a premium. It performs best as the undisputed centrepiece of a well-maintained, high-tech planted aquarium.
Light: High (60–100 PAR); bright light is essential for healthy growth and full ruffling expression. CO2: Required; consistent CO2 injection is necessary for adequate growth rate. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 2 months; daily or every-other-day comprehensive liquid fertiliser. Placement: Midground centrepiece; plant singly and allow 25 cm radius for full leaf expression. Propagation: Seeds from surface flowers; offsets rarely produced — treat each plant with care.
