Taxiphyllum sp. 'Peacock'
Also known as: Peacock Moss
Origin: Southeast Asia
Peacock Moss (Taxiphyllum sp. 'Peacock') is a beautifully distinctive aquascaping moss whose fronds spread outward in broad, fan-shaped tiers strongly reminiscent of a peacock's open tail feathers. Unlike mosses that grow in all directions, Peacock Moss has a pronounced tendency to grow horizontally and flat, making it ideal for spreading across the surface of flat rocks, slate, or low-profile driftwood.
This species grows slowly and prefers cooler water temperatures, performing at its best between 18–24°C. CO2 supplementation improves density and regularity of the fan structure, though the moss will grow without it in suitable conditions. It is more sensitive to elevated temperatures than Java Moss, and in tanks above 28°C growth may stall or the moss may decline.
In aquascaping layouts, Peacock Moss is most effective covering flat horizontal hardscape elements in the foreground or midground, where its spreading, layered form can be fully appreciated from above and the front. It is also stunning when viewed from the side on a vertical rock face.
Light: Low; 15–40 µmol PAR; the flat spreading form is best appreciated under moderate, even illumination. CO2: Beneficial; CO2 improves the precision and density of the fan-branching structure. Fertilisation: Light weekly liquid fertilisation; avoid excess nitrate which can promote algae on slow-growing fronds. Placement: Attach to flat horizontal stones or shallow driftwood; foreground and midground positions showcase its spreading habit. Propagation: Separate and reattach small portions (2–3 cm minimum) to new surfaces; growth from cuttings is slow but reliable.
