Peperomia deppeana
Also known as: Lance Peperomia, Deppe's Peperomia
Origin: Mexico, Central America
Peperomia deppeana is a semi-succulent species from Mexico and Central America with an upright to semi-trailing habit and smooth, lance-shaped leaves that carry subtle pale variegation along the midrib. It is less commonly encountered than P. rotundifolia or P. prostrata, making it an interesting choice for keepers seeking variety in their paludarium plantings. Its modest size and tidy habit make it a versatile mid-layer plant suitable for both substrate planting and cork bark mounting.
Like most peperomias, P. deppeana stores water in its slightly succulent leaves, giving it a degree of drought tolerance that makes it more forgiving than many terrarium plants. It produces occasional upright spike inflorescences with tiny flowers that contribute minor aesthetic interest. It performs reliably in the warm, humid conditions of most tropical paludariums with minimal intervention.
Light: Medium indirect; 1,000–2,500 lux; variegation is most visible at medium light. CO2/Humidity: No CO2; humidity 55–80%; the semi-succulent leaves tolerate brief low-humidity periods. Fertilisation: Dilute balanced fertiliser monthly at quarter strength; minimal needs. Placement: Plant in well-draining substrate or mount on cork bark in the mid-level land zone of the paludarium. Propagation: Stem or leaf cuttings in moist substrate; allow cut ends to callous for 30 minutes before planting.
