Peperomia prostrata (String of Turtles)

Peperomia prostrata is one of the most recognisable and sought-after miniature peperomias, bearing tiny round leaves covered with a complex reticulated pattern of silvery-green veins on a darker green background — an unmistakable resemblance to a turtle's shell. It is native to the rainforests of Brazil where it grows as a small trailing epiphyte over mossy logs and bark, and it translates perfectly to elevated hardscape positions in paludariums where its trailing stems can hang freely.

String of Turtles is a slow grower, making it best suited to smaller builds or as an accent rather than a mass planting. It is slightly more sensitive to overwatering than other peperomias, preferring its substrate or mount to dry slightly between waterings while the surrounding air remains humid. The combination of its striking leaf patterning and trailing habit makes it one of the most visually rewarding plants available for paludarium landmass detailing.

Light: Medium indirect; 1,500–3,000 lux; leaf patterning is clearest at medium light levels. CO2/Humidity: No CO2; humidity 60–80%; allow the mount or substrate surface to dry slightly between waterings. Fertilisation: Dilute balanced fertiliser every 6–8 weeks; very light feeder — overfeeding causes plain green overgrowth. Placement: Mount on cork bark or plant at the edge of a ledge where stems can trail freely downward. Propagation: Single-leaf or stem cuttings placed on moist sphagnum; slow to root but reliable with bottom heat.
