Peperomia rubella
Also known as: Yerba Linda, Red-Back Peperomia
Origin: Jamaica
Peperomia rubella is a charming small-growing species from Jamaica with elliptic, slightly fleshy leaves that are deep green on the upper surface and strikingly flushed with deep burgundy-red on the underside. The stems are also red-tinged, giving the whole plant a warm, two-toned colouration that provides a rich colour counterpoint to the predominantly green plantings of most paludariums. It has a semi-trailing, spreading habit and grows to modest proportions.
Native to the humid forests of Jamaica, P. rubella is well adapted to the warm tropical conditions of most paludariums. It prefers a slightly elevated position where the undersides of its leaves can be admired — placed on a ledge or mid-way up a cork bark wall, the red undersides create a subtle glow-from-within effect when lit from above. It is easy to maintain with minimal care.
Light: Medium indirect; 1,000–2,500 lux; red pigmentation in stems and leaf undersides intensifies under brighter conditions. CO2/Humidity: No CO2; humidity 60–80%; semi-succulent habit allows brief drier periods. Fertilisation: Monthly dilute balanced fertiliser at quarter strength; minimal feeder. Placement: Position on elevated ledges or mid-height on cork bark to display the red leaf undersides effectively. Propagation: Stem cuttings in warm moist substrate; roots reliably within 2–3 weeks.
