Persicaria hydropiperoides
Also known as: Water Knotweed, Mild Waterpepper, Swamp Smartweed
Origin: Americas
Persicaria hydropiperoides is native to the Americas and grows amphibiously in wetlands, riverbanks, and pond margins. In aquariums its lance-shaped leaves can develop reddish to purplish markings and blotches under stronger light, adding an organic, unmanicured character to planted layouts. It is easy to grow, tolerates a wide range of parameters, and grows quickly enough to contribute meaningful nutrient export. It suits biotope and natural-style aquariums particularly well.
Light: Medium (25–60 PAR); reddish leaf markings intensify with stronger lighting. CO2: Not required; tolerates a wide range without supplementation. Fertiliser: Weekly balanced liquid fertiliser; adaptable and tolerant of nutrient variation. Planting: Background groups of 3–5 stems spaced 4–5 cm; trim every 2 weeks. Growth: Fast; 20–50 cm; undemanding and resilient in varied water conditions.
