Persicaria sp. 'Kawagoeanum'
Also known as: Kawagoeanum Knotweed, Patterned Persicaria
Origin: Asia
Persicaria sp. 'Kawagoeanum' is a distinctive aquatic Persicaria recognised for its narrow, lance-shaped leaves bearing subtle yet attractive dark patterning on bright green upper surfaces, similar to the markings seen on some terrestrial knotweed species. In the aquarium it grows upright at a moderate pace and adapts well to a range of water parameters, making it accessible to hobbyists with basic planted tank experience. The attractive leaf patterning provides a naturalistic, forest-floor quality to midground plantings and pairs particularly well with driftwood-based hardscape in nature and biotope aquascapes. A rewarding plant that adds botanical diversity beyond the usual stem plant selection.
Light: Medium to high (35–50 PAR); patterning more visible under good lighting. CO2: Beneficial at 15–25 mg/L; improves growth quality and leaf expression. Fertilisation: Regular moderate fertilisation; tolerates a wide nutrient range. Placement: Midground to background; attractive alongside driftwood and stones. Propagation: Cut 8–12 cm stem sections; roots reliably in substrate.
