Fissidens fontanus
Also known as: Phoenix Moss, Water Pocket Moss, Fissidens Moss
Origin: North America, Asia
Fissidens fontanus, commonly known as Phoenix Moss or Water Pocket Moss, is one of the most distinctive mosses used in the aquarium hobby. Unlike typical mosses, Fissidens grows with a true pinnate leaf structure, where small, tongue-shaped leaves attach alternately along each stem, resembling miniature feathers or fern fronds. This gives it an unusually refined, architectural quality. Native to North America and parts of Asia, it grows as a compact, slow-spreading clump that attaches firmly to hardscape via specialized rhizoids. It is prized in aquascaping for its ability to create incredibly fine-textured carpets, cushions, and accent clusters on small stones and twigs. Growth is deliberately slow, which reduces the frequency of maintenance but demands patience when establishing a scape. Fissidens fontanus performs best in cool to moderate temperatures with soft, clean water and adequate CO2 supplementation. It is more sensitive than Java or Christmas Moss to water quality fluctuations and prefers stable conditions. Poor water circulation leads to sediment accumulation between its tightly packed fronds, which can cause die-off. In well-maintained tanks with balanced nutrients and moderate lighting, it forms lush, deep-green cushions that dramatically enhance rock and wood details. It is particularly popular in nature aquascaping styles influenced by Takashi Amano's aesthetic.
Placement and Attachment Attach small portions of Fissidens fontanus to fine-grained rock, pebbles, or thin branches using gel glue. It attaches slowly, so keep it motionless while rhizoids establish over 2–3 weeks. Ideal for detailed rock faces and diorama-style hardscape.
Lighting Low to moderate light (15–30 µmol/m²/s PAR) suits this moss well. Excessive light increases algae pressure before the slow-growing moss can cover surfaces.
CO2 and Fertilization CO2 supplementation is highly recommended to achieve healthy growth rates. Without CO2, growth is extremely slow. Use a dilute, balanced liquid fertilizer rich in micronutrients. Avoid heavy dosing — Fissidens is sensitive to excess nutrients.
Water Conditions Prefers pH 5.5–7.5, temperature 15–26°C. Soft, pristine water is ideal. Regular water changes of 30–50% weekly maintain the stability this moss requires.
Pruning and Maintenance Minimal pruning needed due to slow growth. Use fine tweezers to remove any dead material. Gentle flow helps dislodge sediment from the fronds. Avoid disturbing attached portions once established.
Propagation Carefully detach and re-attach small clumps. Growth is slow so propagation requires patience.
Common Issues Sediment trapping between fronds is the main issue. Improve flow and reduce fine particulates in the water column. Algae outcompetes this moss quickly if nutrients are unbalanced.
