Phragmites australis
Origin: Europe (native to Netherlands/Belgium)
Phragmites australis is the iconic common reed of Dutch polders and Belgian waterways—a tall, stately grass forming dense colonies with feathery purplish flower plumes in late summer that dry to silvery-brown and persist through winter. Indispensable for large natural ponds, wildlife areas, and constructed wetland filtration systems where it provides cover for birds and wildlife. Plant in wetland margins or shallow water to 30 cm depth.
Plant in shallow water margins or pond edges in full sun. Grows vigorously and may spread aggressively—contain with pond baskets or barriers in ornamental settings. Cut back old stems in late winter. Excellent for natural bog filtration. Native to Belgium and the Netherlands.
