Pilea cadierei
Also known as: Aluminium Plant, Watermelon Pilea
Origin: Vietnam
Pilea cadierei, the Aluminium Plant, is a Vietnamese native named for the distinctive metallic silver patches between the leaf veins that strongly resemble hammered aluminium inlays on a quilted green background. It is a fast-growing, adaptable plant that thrives in the warm, humid land sections of paludariums and larger terrariums, filling in gaps quickly and providing a bright, eye-catching mid-layer between ground mosses and taller plants.
It is among the most beginner-friendly paludarium plants, tolerating a broad range of humidity levels and light conditions while maintaining its attractive variegation. Pinching out growing tips regularly encourages bushy growth and prevents the plant from becoming leggy. It is a valuable filler plant that brings bright, metallic interest to any vivarium build.
Light: Medium indirect; 1,500–3,000 lux; silver marking contrast is best at medium light. CO2/Humidity: No CO2; tolerates 50–85% humidity; keep substrate moist but not waterlogged. Fertilisation: Monthly balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength during the growing season. Placement: Plant in a well-draining, nutrient-rich substrate in the mid-layer of the paludarium land section. Propagation: Stem cuttings root easily in water or moist substrate within 1–2 weeks.
