Pilea glauca
Also known as: Silver Sparkle Pilea, Grey Baby Tears, Red Stem Pilea
Origin: Tropical Americas
Pilea glauca is a diminutive trailing species from tropical America whose common name captures its most distinctive feature perfectly: each tiny leaf carries a fine silver-grey frosting that catches light and creates a sparkling, jewel-like effect across the entire trailing stem. In paludariums it is used as a cascading accent over ledges, rocks, and driftwood, where its delicate habit provides textural contrast to bolder-leaved species without overwhelming the overall composition.
Despite its delicate appearance, P. glauca is a resilient and easy grower in humid conditions. It tolerates moderate shading and prefers to remain consistently moist without sitting in standing water. It roots freely wherever stems contact a surface, allowing it to spread gently and self-attach to hardscape over time. Regular light trimming keeps it full and encourages the densest silver-frosted growth.
Light: Medium indirect; 1,000–2,500 lux; silver frosting is most pronounced under medium light. CO2/Humidity: No CO2; prefers humidity 60–85%; keep substrate and mount surfaces moist. Fertilisation: Monthly dilute liquid fertiliser at quarter strength; minimal feeding required. Placement: Drape over ledges, rocks, or driftwood; stems self-root on contact with moist surfaces. Propagation: Stem cuttings placed on moist substrate or sphagnum root effortlessly within one week.
