Chaetomitrium moorcroftii
Also known as: Pilo Moss
Origin: Southeast Asia
Pilo Moss (Chaetomitrium moorcroftii) is a lush, textured moss whose soft, fine filaments give it a distinctly plush, velvet-like appearance unlike any other aquarium moss. It forms compact, rounded mounds on stones and wood and is best maintained under moderate lighting with CO2 support. Its unusual texture makes it ideal as a focal-point accent rather than a broad carpeting species.
Light: low to medium light; moderate light produces the densest, velvet-like texture. CO2: beneficial; CO2 enrichment promotes thicker, denser mounds. Attachment: attach to smooth stone with superglue gel or fine cotton thread; handle gently. Trimming: trim sparingly to maintain a natural mound shape; avoid disturbing the base attachment. Growth: slow; divide gently and reattach pieces to new hardscape to propagate.
