Pilularia globulifera
Also known as: Pillwort, European Pillwort
Origin: Europe
Pilularia globulifera — Pillwort — is a diminutive European aquatic fern found on the muddy margins of lakes, ponds, and slow streams in western Europe, particularly in the British Isles and Atlantic coastal regions. It produces very fine, needle-thin, erect leaves from a creeping, wiry rhizome, each leaf just 2–10 cm tall. At the base of the leaves, tiny spherical sporocarps ('pills') develop — the structures from which both its common and scientific names derive.
In the aquarium it creates one of the most delicate and unusual foreground textures imaginable: a lawn of hair-thin green needles with tiny round pills at the base, completely unlike any other carpeting plant. It is at its best in cool, soft, very low-nutrient water reminiscent of its natural oligotrophic habitat — conditions that also suit Isoetes, Littorella, and other isoetid-type plants.
Pillwort is slow-growing and requires patience, but for aquarists creating European temperate biotopes, mountain lake aquascapes, or simply wanting something completely unique in their foreground, it is an irreplaceable botanical treasure.
Light: Medium; cool, moderately lit conditions mimic its natural habitat best; avoid high temperatures under bright light. CO2: Not required; performs best in low-nutrient, cool conditions without supplementation. Fertilisation: Minimal; this oligotrophic species is sensitive to excess nutrients — avoid rich substrates. Placement: Foreground in cool-water aquariums; plant rhizome sections just below the substrate surface. Propagation: Divide rhizome sections; each section with leaves and roots will establish independently.
