Piptospatha ridleyi
Also known as: Ridley's Piptospatha
Origin: Borneo, Malaysia
Piptospatha ridleyi is a rheophytic aroid native to the rocky, fast-flowing streams of Borneo, where it clings to submerged and splash-zone rocks and wood. Its narrow, elongated leaves with pronounced midribs are streamlined for current resistance, and the plant can be grown both fully submerged in high-flow aquariums and in the emergent zone of paludariums. It is closely allied to Bucephalandra and shares similar care requirements, though it grows slightly more vigorously and adapts more readily to a range of lighting conditions.
Light: Medium; 30–55 PAR; adapts well to both submerged and emersed light levels. CO2: Not required; optional for submerged cultivation. Water: pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard; good water flow is beneficial. Planting: Attach rhizome to hardscape or plant in substrate in emergent zone. Growth: Slow to moderate; propagate by rhizome division.
