Platycerium bifurcatum
Also known as: Staghorn Fern, Elkhorn Fern
Origin: Australia
Platycerium bifurcatum is the classic Staghorn Fern, producing two types of fronds: round, brown, clasping sterile fronds that grip the mount and decompose to provide nutrients, and large, forked, antler-shaped fertile fronds that arch outward dramatically. It is a natural epiphyte from Australian and Pacific island forests, and adapts readily to being mounted on cork bark plaques or wooden boards in large paludariums where it contributes unmatched structural presence.
The staghorn fern is significantly more tolerant of variable humidity and temperature than most paludarium ferns, making it accessible to hobbyists in a wide range of climates. It should be misted generously two to three times per week and allowed to dry slightly between waterings, mimicking the wet-dry cycles of its natural habitat. Avoid wetting the brown sterile fronds excessively as this accelerates their breakdown.
Light: Medium indirect; 1,500–3,500 lux; tolerates some morning direct light but avoid afternoon sun. CO2/Humidity: No CO2; tolerates 50–85% humidity; water the mount thoroughly then allow to partially dry. Fertilisation: Monthly banana peel or controlled-release fertiliser tucked behind the sterile fronds; liquid feed at half strength every 4–6 weeks. Placement: Mount on a large cork bark plaque or wooden board in the upper land zone of the paludarium. Propagation: Remove pups (offsets at the base of the sterile frond shield) once they have developed at least two fronds.
