Pogostemon helferi
Also known as: Little Star, Downoi
Origin: Southeast Asia (Thailand, Myanmar)
Pogostemon helferi, known as Downoi (meaning 'little star' in Thai), was discovered growing along the Salween River on the Thailand-Myanmar border, where it inhabits clear, warm, fast-flowing rocky streams. It is a rosette-forming plant from the Lamiaceae family — unusual among aquatic plants — and its distinctive curly, star-shaped leaves with crisped, wavy margins give it a highly unique, almost fractal appearance. In the wild it grows attached to rocks or in sandy substrate in direct sunlight, suggesting its preference for high lighting and moderate water movement. In the aquarium it is used exclusively as a foreground or low-midground accent plant, where its compact, 10 cm maximum height and spreading rosette form create a dense but structured mat. P. helferi requires soft, warm water, strong lighting at substrate level, and CO2 injection to perform well. Without these conditions it melts slowly or fails to develop the characteristic wavy leaf texture. It is highly valued in the aquascaping community for its uniqueness and is a frequent feature in award-winning layouts.
Placement Plant individual rosettes in the foreground, spacing them 3–5 cm apart. Each plant will grow outward, eventually filling in gaps. Best situated in open, well-lit foreground areas away from taller plants that might shade it.
Lighting High lighting (70–100 PAR at substrate) is essential for compact, wavy leaf development. Under lower light, the leaves lose their distinctive crisped texture and the plant grows taller. Emitting sufficient substrate-level light is key.
CO2 & Fertilisation CO2 injection at 20–30 ppm is required for reliable growth and characteristic leaf form. Soft water (under 8° GH) is important. Weekly macro and micronutrient dosing with adequate iron maintains healthy, dark-green leaf colour.
Propagation Propagates by producing side rosettes at the base of the mother plant. These can be carefully separated and replanted once they have developed their own root system. Propagation is slow compared to carpet plants that spread via runners.
Trimming Minimal trimming needed due to the compact rosette form. Remove yellowing or damaged outer leaves at the base to keep individual rosettes tidy. Thin the group periodically by removing crowded outer rosettes to maintain good light penetration.
