Pogostemon helferi
Also known as: Downoi, Little Star Plant, Star Pogostemon
Origin: Thailand

Pogostemon helferi, known as Downoi (meaning 'little star' in Thai), is a small, rosette-forming aquatic plant from the fast-flowing hill streams of Thailand and Myanmar. Its most distinctive feature is its deeply crinkled, wavy-margined leaves arranged in a compact, star-like rosette. The leaf texture is remarkably unusual — no other common aquarium plant has a similar highly ruffled or crimped leaf surface — making it one of the most visually interesting plants in the hobby.
Downoi grows as a compact rosette reaching 5–10 cm in height, making it suitable for the foreground to midground of aquariums. Its star-shaped growth pattern and dense, textured leaves create a focal point in aquascapes, particularly effective when grouped in clusters of 3–5 plants. Under strong light with CO2, the leaves are vivid bright green; under lower light they become paler and less compact.
The plant requires specific conditions: it prefers cool, soft, slightly acidic water (reflecting its highland stream origin), moderate to strong light, and CO2 injection for active growth. It is not suitable for very warm tanks (above 28°C). In appropriate conditions, it is a moderately easy plant that rewards the aquarist with one of the most unique leaf forms in freshwater aquascaping.
Propagation occurs through side shoots that develop around the base of the main rosette.
Light: Medium to high light (25–60+ PAR). Low light produces pale, less compact plants without the characteristic wavy leaf form.
CO2: CO2 injection (15–25 mg/L) strongly recommended for healthy compact growth and vivid green color.
Temperature: Prefers cool to moderate temperatures (18–26°C). Struggles above 28°C — not suitable for warm tropical tanks.
Substrate: Rich aqua soil provides optimal root nutrition. Add root tabs in nutrient-poor substrates.
Placement: Foreground to midground. Plant in groups of 3–5 for natural appearance.
Propagation: Divide side shoots that form around the base of established plants.
Water Parameters: pH 5.5–7.5, temperature 18–26°C, soft to moderately hard water (GH 2–12).
