Pogostemon helferi
Origin: Thailand
Pogostemon helferi (Downoi, meaning 'little star' in Thai) is a unique foreground plant with star-shaped, deeply ruffled bright-green leaves forming low rosettes close to the substrate. Its unusual texture — unlike any other aquarium plant — creates distinctive foreground detail in natural aquascapes. A CO2-demanding species that rewards dedicated care with steady, compact growth. A favourite in Iwagumi-style layouts where a single visually interesting foreground species is desired.
High light, CO2 injection strongly recommended for compact growth. pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 20–28°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8. Anchor firmly in nutrient-rich fine substrate. Grows slowly; allow several weeks to establish before judging. Propagate by rhizome division. Without CO2 becomes leggy and may melt back; most successful in high-tech setups.
