Pogostemon helferi
Also known as: Downoi, Little Star Plant
Origin: Thailand
Pogostemon helferi 'Downoi' (meaning 'little star' in Thai) is a unique aquarium plant native to the mountain streams of Thailand, where it grows on rocky stream beds. Its distinctive rosette form — with densely crinkled, star-shaped whorls of leaves radiating from the centre — is quite unlike any other aquarium plant and provides a genuinely distinctive texture in the foreground of planted tanks.
This species is more demanding than many aquarium plants: it requires medium to high light, benefits strongly from CO2 supplementation, and grows best in soft, slightly acidic water. Without adequate light or CO2 the rosettes become open and leggy. In good conditions, however, it forms tight, jewel-like star rosettes that slowly spread across the foreground substrate via short stolons.
P. helferi 'Downoi' is a signature plant in many high-end nature aquascapes, used as a foreground accent plant or to create a mixed foreground alongside carpet plants such as Hemianthus callitrichoides. Its crinkled leaf texture contrasts beautifully with the smooth surfaces of stones in Iwagumi-style layouts.
Light: Medium to high; 60–120 µmol PAR minimum — insufficient light causes leggy, open rosettes. CO2: Recommended; the plant performs significantly better with consistent CO2 supplementation. Fertilisation: Regular all-in-one liquid fertilisation; ensure adequate phosphorus and iron for tight rosette growth. Placement: Plant in foreground substrate; space rosettes 3–5 cm apart and allow them to spread naturally via stolons. Propagation: Detach stolon offsets once they have 4–5 leaves and replant in the substrate nearby.
