Pogostemon helferi
Also known as: Little Star, Dao Noi, Star Plant
Origin: Thailand
Pogostemon helferi 'Little Star' is a captivating stem plant native to Thailand, renowned for its highly distinctive crinkled, star-shaped leaves that radiate outward from compact nodes along the substrate. Unlike most stem plants, P. helferi grows in a low, spreading habit, making it one of the few stem species suitable for foreground and low midground placement. The bright green, heavily textured leaves add a unique structural quality that is difficult to replicate with other plant species. It thrives in soft, slightly acidic water with consistent CO2 injection and benefits from nutrient-rich substrate. Regular side-shoot trimming encourages it to spread and fill available space.
Light: Medium to high (35–55 PAR); lower light causes etiolated, pale growth. CO2: Recommended at 20–30 mg/L; important for compact, healthy growth. Fertilisation: Nutrient-rich substrate beneficial; regular liquid fertilisation required. Placement: Foreground to low midground; ideal for naturalistic and nature aquarium layouts. Propagation: Separate basal side shoots and replant; stems root readily in fine substrate.
